Screen or print?
Use HEX or RGB for anything on a screen, and CMYK or Pantone for anything printed.
CMYK is a starting point
Real CMYK values depend on the paper and the printer’s profile. Ask your printer which profile to use for final files.
Pantone is approximate
Screens can’t show every ink. Check the match against a printed Pantone swatch book before you send anything to print.
What’s the difference between HEX and RGB?
Nothing but the notation. Both describe the red, green, and blue light a screen mixes. HEX writes each amount as two hexadecimal digits. Read more in What are HEX colors?
How is the closest Pantone found?
We convert your color and every Pantone in our list into CIE Lab, a color space modeled on human vision, and pick the one with the smallest difference (Delta E). Under 2 is a very close match; over 10 means nothing in the list is close.
Why does my print look different from my screen?
Screens add light (RGB) while ink absorbs it (CMYK), and printers can’t reproduce some bright screen colors at all. See CMYK vs RGB.
