Dithering

Mixing pixels of available colors in a pattern to fake colors or smooth gradients that can't be shown directly.

Also called dither

Dithering scatters pixels of the colors a device or file can show so that, from a distance, they blend into in-between colors.

It hides banding in gradients and was essential in the days of limited color screens.
